Client Overview

Our client was a globally renowned electric vehicle (EV) battery manufacturer, sought to expand its operations in Southeast Asia, particularly in Indonesia, to capitalize on the growing demand for EVs. As part of this expansion, the client needed to identify reliable local suppliers for key raw materials such as nickel, cobalt, lithium, and manganese, which are crucial for EV battery production.

Our Approach

Local Supplier Mapping

Mapped out potential suppliers of critical raw materials such as nickel, cobalt, lithium, and manganese. This included both primary producers (mining companies) and secondary suppliers (refiners and distributors).

Telephonic and Face-to-Face Interviews

Conducted a total of 40 interviews with a mix of telephonic and face-to-face engagements

  • 25 telephonic interviews with small and medium-sized local suppliers, including mining companies and refiners, to understand their production capacities, pricing strategies, and willingness to engage in long-term contracts.
  • 15 face-to-face interviews with executives from larger local battery manufacturers and industry experts to gather insights on their raw material sourcing strategies, supplier relationships, and future outlook for EV battery demand.
  • Held 10 interviews with key industry experts, including representatives from government agencies, industry associations.

Impact We Created

  • We recommended 12 potential local suppliers of nickel, cobalt, lithium, and manganese, including five primary producers and seven refiners with capacities to meet the client’s raw material needs.
  • We recommended client to improve supply chain reliability by diversifying its raw material sourcing across multiple suppliers, reducing the risk of supply disruptions by 20%.
