Advanced driver assistance systems are moving beyond premium vehicles and becoming part of mainstream vehicle specifications. Regulation, safety ratings, falling sensor costs and OEM competition are accelerating this shift.
The International Energy Agency estimates that around half of new cars sold globally in 2025 featured systems capable of automating steering and speed control, compared with less than 1% a decade earlier. 

The market question is no longer whether ADAS will expand, but which features are moving from optional equipment toward standard or widely available configurations. 

ADAS Adoption Is Moving in Tiers 

Not every ADAS feature is reaching the mainstream at the same pace. A useful way to track the market is to group technologies by their current adoption trajectory: 

  • Safety-critical: AEB, pedestrian AEB and lane-departure warning, supported strongly by regulation.  
  • Driver assistance: Adaptive cruise control, lane-centering and blind-spot monitoring, increasingly available beyond premium vehicles.  
  • Advanced Level 2: Hands-free highway assistance and automated lane changes, still concentrated in premium and technology-led models.  

For suppliers, this segmentation helps identify which features are approaching high-volume adoption and which remain specialized opportunities. 

Automatic Emergency Braking Has the Strongest Regulatory Pull 

Automatic Emergency Braking is one of the clearest examples of a premium technology becoming a baseline safety feature. 

The European Union’s General Safety Regulation requires new cars and vans to incorporate automated braking and lane-keeping systems, with the requirements applying to all new vehicles from July 2024. 

The US is following a similar path. NHTSA requires AEB, including pedestrian AEB, on new passenger cars and light trucks by September 2029. The agency estimates the rule could prevent at least 360 fatalities and 24,000 injuries annually. 

For suppliers, regulatory adoption expands the addressable market for the cameras, radar, electronic braking controls and computing systems supporting AEB. 

Lane Support and Adaptive Cruise Control Are Following 

Lane-departure warning has become relatively mature, while lane-keeping assistance, lane-centering and adaptive cruise control provide progressively greater intervention. 

Euro NCAP’s 2025 assisted-driving assessments included models such as the Kia EV3, Renault 5, Toyota bZ4X and MG ZS, illustrating how assisted-driving capabilities are appearing across broader vehicle segments. 

Adoption remains uneven. Mainstream models may offer basic lane warnings, while higher-end vehicles combine lane-centering, adaptive cruise control and more sophisticated driver assistance. 

For suppliers, the opportunity lies in tracking which features are moving into which vehicle segments, rather than treating ADAS as a single market. 

Sensor Architecture Is Helping Features Move Down-Market 

ADAS expansion also depends on the underlying sensor and computing architecture. Basic systems may use a forward-facing camera, while more advanced functions combine cameras, radar, ultrasonic sensors and greater processing capability. 

As vehicle platforms become more software-defined, shared sensing and computing can support multiple functions. This can improve the economics of deploying additional ADAS capabilities and accelerate their movement from premium features toward mainstream equipment. 

Regulation and Safety Ratings Pull Adoption Differently 

Regulation establishes a minimum technical requirement, while consumer safety ratings can push OEMs beyond that baseline. 

Euro NCAP has progressively strengthened its assessment of crash avoidance and driver-assistance technologies. Its 2030 roadmap includes more capable lane-support, AEB and automated-steering systems among the areas expected to receive greater emphasis. 

The two forces create different forms of market pull: 

  • Regulatory pull makes selected technologies mandatory.  
  • Safety-rating and market pull encourage OEMs to offer capabilities beyond the minimum.  

The strongest opportunities can emerge where these forces overlap, creating both a regulatory requirement and a competitive reason for adoption. 

Where ADAS Demand Is Moving Next 

The market is developing along three broad trajectories: 

  • Mainstreaming: AEB, pedestrian AEB, lane-departure warning and basic lane-support functions.  
  • Broadening: Adaptive cruise control, blind-spot detection and lane-centering moving into mid-market vehicles.  
  • Premium-to-volume transition: More sophisticated Level 2 systems gradually expanding as technology costs decline and OEM platforms mature.  

The pace differs by geography. The IEA estimates that advanced driver-assistance systems capable of simultaneously controlling steering and speed were fitted to about 10% of cars sold in China and 6% in the United States in 2025. 

For suppliers, these differences can reveal where feature penetration is accelerating and where regulatory or competitive conditions may create the next volume opportunity.
