India’s flexible pipe market is gaining relevance as the country expands gas infrastructure, offshore exploration, and subsea energy development. Flexible pipes offer advantages in applications requiring corrosion resistance, movement tolerance, and installation across challenging environments. India already had about 25,923 km of operational natural gas pipelines by September 2025, while another 9,954 km was under construction. At the same time, deeper offshore exploration is creating new opportunities for risers, flowlines, and subsea connections as India works to strengthen domestic energy production.

Key Factors Driving Growth in India’s Flexible Pipe Industry

Expanding Gas Infrastructure Supports Flexible Pipe Demand

India’s effort to increase natural gas use is one of the most important structural drivers for the flexible pipe industry. The government aims to raise natural gas from around 6.7% to 15% of the national energy mix by 2030, requiring continued investment across transmission, distribution, processing, and related infrastructure. As of September 2025, India had 34,238 km of authorized natural gas pipelines, including nearly 26,000 km already operational. Flexible pipe solutions can complement this broader infrastructure buildout in specialized applications where conventional rigid pipelines are less suitable, particularly where routing complexity, vibration, corrosion, or frequent connections are involved.

Offshore Exploration Is Creating New Subsea Opportunities

India is placing greater emphasis on offshore hydrocarbon exploration, particularly in deepwater basins. Since 2015, the country has reported 172 hydrocarbon discoveries, including 62 offshore discoveries, while nearly one million square kilometres of previously restricted offshore acreage has been opened for exploration. The Mahanadi offshore basin is one example of this renewed activity. In July 2026, India began drilling the first of four planned deepwater appraisal wells there. Such projects can expand demand for flexible risers, flowlines, jumpers, and other high-performance subsea pipe systems.

Exploration Investment Is Broadening the Future Project Pipeline

India’s Open Acreage Licensing Policy has significantly expanded exploration activity. By 2026, 172 OALP blocks covering nearly 3.8 lakh square kilometres had been awarded, with committed investments exceeding US$4.3 billion. Around 674 wells were drilled during FY2025–26, alongside five new discoveries and seven monetized discoveries. This growing exploration pipeline gives flexible pipe suppliers a broader opportunity base across new offshore developments and brownfield projects.

Government Initiatives Supporting India’s Flexible Pipe Market

Government policy is becoming increasingly supportive of offshore infrastructure development. The Samudra Manthan National Offshore Exploration Scheme, approved in July 2026, carries an outlay of ₹84,084 crore through FY2030–31 and aims to add more than 600 MMTOE of hydrocarbon reserves. HELP and OALP reforms are also opening more acreage, simplifying exploration processes, and encouraging private investment, strengthening the long-term project pipeline for subsea equipment and flexible pipe suppliers.

Competitive Landscape of India’s Flexible Pipe Industry

India’s flexible pipe industry includes global subsea technology providers, domestic pipe manufacturers, EPC companies, offshore contractors, and oilfield service businesses. Competition increasingly centers on pressure capability, corrosion resistance, fatigue life, material engineering, installation efficiency, and compliance with demanding offshore specifications. As deepwater projects become more technically complex, suppliers offering integrated engineering, qualification, installation support, inspection, and lifecycle services are likely to gain an advantage over companies competing primarily on product price.

Challenges Affecting India’s Flexible Pipe Market

High Technical and Project Costs

Flexible pipes used in offshore and high-pressure applications require advanced polymers, metallic reinforcement layers, specialized manufacturing, and rigorous qualification. These factors increase initial costs and can make adoption difficult for projects with tight capital budgets.

Dependence on Specialized Technology

India continues to rely on international expertise for some advanced subsea systems, materials, and engineering capabilities. Long qualification cycles, imported components, foreign-exchange movements, and limited domestic manufacturing capacity for specialized products can affect project costs and delivery schedules.

Future Outlook

As we look ahead, India’s flexible pipe industry is entering a phase where offshore exploration and gas infrastructure could become increasingly important demand engines. The story is no longer limited to expanding conventional pipelines; it is also about accessing deeper waters, developing new discoveries, and improving the economics of complex fields. The ₹84,084 crore Samudra Manthan program, expanding offshore acreage, and nearly 10,000 km of natural gas pipelines under construction provide a meaningful base for future opportunities. As projects become technically demanding, suppliers offering durable, lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and locally supported flexible pipe systems should be better positioned to participate in India’s evolving energy infrastructure market.

Consultants at Nexdigm, in their latest publication “India Flexible Pipe Market Outlook to 2035,” analyze the sector By Product Type (Bounded, Unbounded Flexible Pipes, Flexible Jumpers, Risers and Flowlines), By Application (Offshore Oil and Gas Production, Shale Oil and Gas Production, Mining Slurry Transportation and Chemical Transfer Systems).

Nexdigm suggests that businesses in India’s Flexible Pipe Industry should strengthen advanced material capabilities, invest in fatigue-resistant technologies, build strategic partnerships with offshore operators, and improve lifecycle services to capture growing demand from complex offshore developments.
