Medical device market share is difficult to measure when competitors sell through distributors; product categories overlap, and shipment records cover only part of the market. Trade and shipment data can still reveal meaningful competitive signals, including changing supplier shares, new destination markets, and shifts in product mix. The important distinction is between measuring a vendor’s position within an observed dataset and claiming to know its total market share.

For device manufacturers and distributors, this analysis can help identify competitors gaining traction, products where supplier positions are changing, and markets that merit closer investigation.

Why Market Share Requires a Clear Definition

Before calculating share, companies need to define the relevant market. A broad medical-device category may combine products with different buyers, prices, and competitive sets. Even a narrow product group can contain meaningful differences in technology, intended use, or regulatory classification.

A defensible assessment specifies:

  • Product scope: The device category, product codes and comparable alternatives included in the analysis.
  • Geographic scope: The destination country or region being assessed.
  • Measurement basis: Whether share is calculated by import value, shipment quantity, shipment count or identified buyers.
  • Time period: The baseline and comparison periods used to measure change.

These choices can produce different results. A vendor may lead by shipment count because it makes frequent small deliveries, while another leads by value because it sells higher-priced equipment. Neither metric alone establishes leadership across the entire market.

What Trade Data Can Reveal About Competitive Position

India’s medical-device trade provides useful context for competitive analysis. Government data recorded imports of ₹137,088 crore and exports of ₹42,360 crore in FY2024–25. Those totals indicate the scale of cross-border activity, but they do not reveal the market share of individual manufacturers or brands.

To measure vendor position, analysts need more granular evidence. Product-level customs data can show the countries supplying a category, while shipment records may identify individual exporters and importers where those fields are available. Combining the sources can help distinguish country-of-origin trends from company-level activity.

A rise in a vendor’s observed shipment share may signal stronger distribution, new customers, or greater order frequency. It can also reflect a reporting change, a one-off procurement contract, or a shift in routing. Competitive conclusions should therefore be tested against multiple periods and, where possible, validated with sales disclosures, procurement records or market interviews.

Applying Medical Device Market Share Tracking to Competitive Decisions

Effective medical device market share tracking combines a clearly defined market with measurable shipment activity and commercial interpretation. By comparing vendor shares across product categories, destinations and time periods, companies can distinguish sustained competitive gains from one-off procurement contracts, pricing changes or shifts in reporting coverage.

  • Calculate comparable shares: Measure each vendor’s portion of observed import value, quantity or shipment activity within the defined product and destination scope.
  • Track share movement: Compare periods to identify vendors gaining or losing observed position, not merely those with the highest current volume.
  • Separate growth sources: Determine whether a vendor’s change reflects new buyers, additional destinations, higher shipment frequency or expansion into different products.
  • Check coverage gaps: Assess whether direct shipment records, customs data and available market sources capture the relevant vendors and channels consistently.
  • Validate competitive meaning: Investigate whether apparent share gains reflect sustained commercial traction, a large one-off contract, pricing effects or changes in data coverage.

A share-tracking dashboard is most useful when it explains why the metric changed and what the business should do next. A percentage without a defined denominator is decoration pretending to be strategy.

Nexdigm’s Medical Device Competitive-Position Framework

Nexdigm can structure market-share assessment around four decisions:

Medical Device Competitive-Position Framework

  • Define the market: Set the product, geography, period and measurement basis before calculating shares.
  • Build the vendor baseline: Standardise company identities, product classifications and available trade or shipment records.
  • Measure competitive movement: Compare vendor shares across periods and examine changes in buyers, destinations, quantities and product mix.
  • Validate and prioritise: Test whether the observed movement is persistent and commercially relevant, then identify competitors, markets or product lines requiring action.

This approach helps businesses distinguish a genuine change in competitive position from a change in shipment patterns or data coverage.

Nexdigm’s Case Study: Tracking Competitive Share Movement

A device distributor assessed 15 vendors across 4 product categories in 5 markets. 2 vendors gained more than 6 percentage points of observed import value share over 12 months, while one expanded into three additional destinations. The distributor prioritised these competitors for pricing, channel, and product portfolio benchmarking.
