Technology investment is active, but the headline total can hide how unevenly capital is distributed. In 2025, artificial intelligence companies attracted 61% of global venture capital, or USD 258.7 billion. Within AI, infrastructure and hosting drew USD 109.3 billion. The OECD also found that mega-deals accounted for about 73% of AI investment value.

For founders and investors, this points to a market where access to capital depends on more than a compelling technology. Investors are looking for credible routes to scale, evidence of customer value and a financing plan that can survive longer sales cycles or changing market sentiment.

Separate funding momentum from market readiness

A promising funding category is not automatically a strong investment. Assess each technology against its commercial stage and the proof it has accumulated:

  • Problem fit: Is the product solving a costly, frequent problem for a defined buyer?
  • Customer evidence: Are users renewing, expanding, integrating or paying at a sustainable level?
  • Delivery readiness: Can the product meet security, reliability, regulatory and service requirements?
  • Economic viability: Do gross margin, customer acquisition cost, deployment effort and retention support scale?

These tests help distinguish technical progress from commercial adoption. A prototype can attract early interest while still requiring significant product development, integration work or customer education before revenue becomes repeatable.

A technology investment ecosystem assessment should map the surrounding conditions too: talent availability, data and compute access, intellectual property, regulation, procurement cycles, strategic partners and competing solutions. These factors can determine whether an attractive technology can be built and sold in a specific market.

Evaluate routes to liquidity early

Exit potential should be tested from the beginning, not added to the investment case at the end. Potential paths include strategic acquisition, secondary share sales, public listing or continued private growth. Each requires different scale, governance, financial visibility and buyer interest.

Build a realistic buyer map. Identify which companies could acquire the technology, what capability they would gain, and whether the product can integrate into their existing platforms. For a public-market route, examine revenue quality, growth durability, margins, customer concentration and the controls required for public-company readiness.

Funding concentration also creates risk. When capital flows heavily toward a narrow group of themes, valuations and financing availability can shift quickly. Investment decisions should include a runway plan for slower fundraising, milestone-based capital releases and clear indicators for when to accelerate, partner or pause.

Framework: Capital-to-Commercial Readiness Screen

Capital-to-Commercial Readiness Screening Framework

  1. Map funding momentum
Track investment by technology, stage, geography, investor type and deal concentration.
  2. Verify customer demand
Test buyer urgency, willingness to pay, renewal behavior, sales-cycle length and adoption barriers.
  3. Assess delivery readiness
Review product maturity, security, regulation, talent, infrastructure and implementation capacity.
  4. Model scale economics
Stress-test revenue growth, margins, customer acquisition, retention, capital needs and downside runway.
  5. Validate exit paths
Identify plausible strategic buyers and public-market requirements, then define milestones that improve liquidity options.

Nexdigm Case Study

Nexdigm assessed 32 technology companies across three funding markets, scoring capital momentum, customer traction, readiness and exit options. Our analysis prioritized six companies for deeper diligence and recommended milestone-based funding for the two with the strongest repeat-revenue evidence.
