The automotive sensor market is expanding alongside the vehicle’s ability to perceive its surroundings, monitor its own systems and support automated driving functions. Cameras, radar, ultrasonic sensors, LiDAR and other sensing technologies are increasingly being combined rather than deployed in isolation.
The demand opportunity is also becoming more uneven.
In China, Level 2 and above ADAS penetration in passenger vehicles reached 56.1% in the first half of 2025, according to XEPS, while the European Union has made a broad range of camera- and sensor-enabled safety systems mandatory for new vehicles.
For suppliers and investors, the relevant question is therefore not simply how many vehicles use sensors, but which sensor technologies are gaining volume, where they are being deployed and what is driving their adoption.
ADAS Is Expanding the Sensor Content of Vehicles
Advanced driver assistance is one of the strongest drivers of sensor demand.
A modern ADAS architecture can combine cameras for visual recognition, radar for object detection and distance measurement, ultrasonic sensors for short-range perception, and LiDAR in higher-end or more advanced applications.
The European Union provides a clear regulatory demand signal. Since July 2024, all new motor vehicles sold in the EU have been required to incorporate multiple safety systems, including reversing detection using cameras or sensors. Cars and vans must also incorporate lane-keeping and automated-braking capabilities. Further requirements are being phased in through 2029.
Regulation therefore creates a baseline for sensor penetration, while OEM strategy determines how far sensor configurations extend beyond the minimum requirement.
Radar and Cameras Remain High-Volume Technologies
Sensor demand is shaped by multi-sensor configurations rather than standalone unit volumes, as advancing ADAS requires richer camera and radar suites. Radar remains critical for long-range tracking and low-visibility safety functions (such as Level 2 systems), while cameras provide essential visual data for lane tracking, traffic-sign recognition, and object classification.
China clearly illustrates this shift. Its ADAS sensor market reached roughly $1.76 billion in 2025, with radar capturing one-third of the total and strong growth projected for image and ultrasonic sensors through 2032.
LiDAR Is Moving Beyond the Premium End Of The Market
LiDAR remains a smaller-volume technology than cameras or radar, but its adoption is becoming commercially significant.
China is currently a particularly important market. Gasgoo data for January–April 2025 showed Hesai, Huawei and RoboSense collectively accounting for nearly 90% of China’s LiDAR market, highlighting both rapid deployment and supplier concentration.
The strategic question for suppliers is whether LiDAR remains concentrated in premium vehicles or moves further into mainstream models as costs decline and ADAS capabilities expand.
That distinction matters because a technology with lower penetration, but high growth can create a different opportunity from a mature sensor category with much higher installed volumes.
EVs Are Adding Another Demand Layer
Electrification is also increasing the importance of sensing across the vehicle.
EV platforms rely heavily on electronic systems to monitor battery temperature, voltage, current, pressure and other operating parameters.
At the same time, many newer EV platforms are being launched with advanced ADAS as a differentiating feature.
The combination is particularly visible in China, where electric cars accounted for nearly 55% of all car sales in 2025.
This creates an important overlap between two growth drivers: electrification increases electronic content, while ADAS increases perception and safety-related sensor content.
Where Sensor Demand Is Concentrating
Sensor opportunity can therefore be assessed across four distinct areas:
- High-volume sensing: Cameras, radar and ultrasonic sensors serving large vehicle populations.
- High-growth technologies: LiDAR and more advanced radar configurations gaining penetration.
- High-content vehicle platforms: Premium and software-defined vehicles carrying larger sensor suites.
- Regulation-driven adoption: Markets where mandatory safety functions accelerate sensor installation.
China is particularly important for technology adoption and manufacturing scale. Europe offers strong regulatory pull, while other markets can provide growth as ADAS moves from premium vehicles into higher-volume segments.
This creates different strategic choices for the suppliers:
compete for scale in mature sensor categories, specialize in higher-value technologies, or target vehicle platforms where sensor content is increasing fastest.
