Vietnam’s native starch market is supported by its large cassava-processing base, expanding food industry, export activity, and growing industrial applications. Native starch is widely used in noodles, bakery products, sauces, confectionery, beverages, paper, textiles, adhesives, and pharmaceuticals. Vietnam has more than 140 cassava starch processing plants, with designed capacity of about 13.4 million tonnes of fresh cassava annually and actual processing capacity near 9.3 million tonnes. This established processing infrastructure provides a strong foundation for domestic starch production and export-oriented growth.

Market Drivers of Vietnam’s Native Starch Industry

Cassava Processing Strengthens Raw Material Availability

Vietnam has developed one of Southeast Asia’s most significant cassava-processing industries. In 2025, the country exported more than 3.61 million tonnes of cassava products, generating around US$1.13 billion during the first eleven months. This large agricultural and processing base supports native starch manufacturers with established sourcing networks, processing capacity, and export infrastructure. Tapioca starch remains particularly important across food, beverage, paper, adhesive, textile, and industrial applications.

Food Processing Expands Domestic Consumption

Vietnam’s food-processing sector is growing alongside higher household incomes, urbanization, modern retail, and changing consumption patterns. The country has more than 5,000 enterprises operating in the food industry, creating a broad customer base for functional ingredients. Native starch is used to improve viscosity, texture, binding, moisture retention, and product consistency in noodles, bakery products, sauces, confectionery, processed meats, dairy preparations, and convenience foods.

Manufacturing Growth Broadens Industrial Applications

Vietnam’s processing and manufacturing sector grew by approximately 10.6% in 2025, while industrial production increased around 9.5%. Expansion in paper, packaging, textiles, pharmaceuticals, adhesives, and other manufacturing activities should broaden native starch demand beyond traditional food applications.

Government Initiatives Supporting Vietnam’s Native Starch Market

Vietnam continues to promote agricultural processing, higher-value manufacturing, export diversification, and deeper integration into international trade. The government is targeting processing and manufacturing to account for roughly 28% of GDP by 2030, compared with about 24.5% in 2025. Trade agreements and origin-based tariff preferences are also helping cassava exporters improve competitiveness and expand access to international markets.

Competitive Landscape of Vietnam’s Native Starch Industry

Vietnam’s native starch industry includes large cassava processors, regional starch manufacturers, exporters, food-ingredient suppliers, and industrial distributors. Competition focuses on starch purity, viscosity consistency, moisture content, pricing, processing efficiency, export certification, and logistics. Domestic producers benefit from proximity to cassava-growing regions, while larger suppliers compete through scale, product quality, export relationships, technical support, and the ability to serve food, paper, textile, adhesive, and pharmaceutical customers.

Challenges Affecting Vietnam’s Native Starch Market

Heavy Dependence on China

China remains Vietnam’s dominant cassava export market. In 2024, it accounted for about 92.9% of cassava and cassava-product export volume. This concentration leaves producers vulnerable to changes in Chinese demand, pricing, border procedures, and trade conditions.

Raw Material and Sustainability Pressures

Cassava yields can be affected by weather, crop disease, land-use competition, and farm productivity. Processors must also manage wastewater, energy use, and environmental requirements while maintaining competitive production costs.

Future Outlook

As we move ahead, Vietnam’s native starch industry should benefit from its large cassava-processing base, growing food sector, and expanding manufacturing economy. Cassava and related product exports already exceed US$1 billion annually, while domestic processing capacity provides a substantial platform for further value addition. Future demand should increasingly favor consistent-quality, food-grade, traceable, and application-specific starch products. Companies that diversify export markets, improve processing efficiency, strengthen farmer linkages, and expand into higher-value food and industrial applications should remain well positioned.

Consultants at Nexdigm, in their latest publication “Vietnam Native Starch Market Outlook to 2035,” analyze the sector By Product Material Type (Corn, Tapioca, Wheat, Potato and Rice Ntaive Starch), By Functionality Type (Thickening, Binding, Stabilizing, Gelling Starch), By Product Form (Powdered, Granulated and Food Grade Native Starch)

Nexdigm suggests that businesses in the Vietnam Native Starch Industry should focus on diversifying sourcing, targeting industrial applications, ensuring consistent quality and providing application support to capture opportunities in bakery, dairy, sauces, snacks, packaging, and adhesives.
